Your Perfect Winter Day in Lakeville, MN

A Local's Guide to Embracing the Season

When people ask me why we chose to build our home in Lakeville, I usually start with the obvious answers—the schools, the community, the proximity to everything we need.

But the real magic? It's how this city transforms winter from something to endure into something to actually enjoy. After five years of raising our family here, I've learned that Lakeville doesn't just tolerate winter—it celebrates it.

Whether you're already calling the south metro home or considering a move to Lakeville, here's how a perfect winter day unfolds in this vibrant community. Trust me, by the end of this, you'll understand why families keep choosing Lakeville as their home base.

Morning: Fuel Up at The Better Half

Every great winter day in Lakeville starts with good coffee, and Better Half Coffee has mastered the art of creating a space that feels both energizing and cozy. Located in the heart of downtown Lakeville, this isn't your typical grab-and-go coffee shop—it's a genuine community gathering spot where you'll spot everyone from professionals connecting over lunch or coffee to parents juggling toddlers and hot cocoa.

The fun twist on a retro diner and natural light streaming through the large windows create an atmosphere that's perfect for either settling in with a book or catching up with neighbors. The real win? The staff has genuinely perfected the balance of being welcoming to families while maintaining an environment where adults can actually have a conversation.

On weekends, arrive early if you want to snag one of the cozy booths past the bar—this place has become a Lakeville staple for a reason. The location also makes it an ideal starting point before exploring the rest of downtown's shops and restaurants.

Mid-Morning Adventure: Sledding at All Saints Church

Once everyone's caffeinated and bundled up, it's time to embrace what Minnesota winters do best. The sledding hill at All Saints Church (19795 Holyoke Ave) is one of the biggest in the area and has become the unofficial winter headquarters for Lakeville families.

You'll find families of all ages, from toddlers experiencing their first sled ride to teenagers showing off their technique. The hill offers a perfect gradient for different comfort levels, with gentler slopes for younger kids and steeper sections for the more adventurous.

Pro tip: The church parking lot provides easy access. Pack a thermos of hot chocolate, because once you're there, good luck convincing anyone to leave.

Lunch: Warm Up at Lakeville Brewing Company

After working up an appetite on the slopes, head to Lakeville Brewing Company for lunch. This local brewery has perfected the art of being both family-friendly and a genuine craft beer destination—no small feat.

The industrial-modern space features high ceilings, plenty of natural light, and a relaxed atmosphere where kids are genuinely welcome. Their menu goes well beyond typical brewery fare, with options that satisfy both adventurous eaters and picky little ones. The Kenzie Tacos are my personal favorite and I will ALWAYS recommend them to anyone that asks!

For parents, the craft beer selection showcases truly local brewing—they're not just slapping "craft" on generic options. The taproom offers a rotating selection of their own brews, and the staff is knowledgeable without being pretentious. On busier weekends, the energy is lively without being overwhelming, and there's enough space that you don't feel like you're sitting on top of other diners.

The location just a block off of the main drag downtown makes it easy to access from anywhere in Lakeville, and there's ample parking—a detail that matters more than you might think when wrangling winter gear and kids.

Afternoon Activity: Wild Things Indoor Playground

When the temperature drops below comfortable or you need to burn off remaining energy in a controlled environment, Wild Things Indoor Playground (20450 Kenrick Ave, Suite 100) becomes every parent's secret weapon.

This isn't a cramped play space with a few tired toys—Wild Things offers a genuinely impressive setup with climbing structures, slides, a dedicated toddler area, and various stations that keep kids engaged for hours. The facility is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, which any parent who's visited less-than-stellar indoor play spaces will deeply appreciate.

What sets Wild Things apart is the thoughtful design. There are enough distinct play areas that kids can explore different activities without everything feeling chaotic. The seating for parents provides clear sightlines, so you can actually sit down (novel concept!) while still keeping eyes on your kids. They also host various events and classes throughout the winter, from story times to sensory play sessions.

The pricing is reasonable, especially considering the quality of the facility and the sheer amount of time kids will happily spend there. For families new to Lakeville or visiting for the day, this is one of those places that instantly communicates the city's commitment to creating family-friendly infrastructure.

Sweet Treat: Donut Star

No perfect day is complete without something sweet, and Donut Star delivers exactly what you'd hope for in a local donut shop. Located at 7656 160th St W, this family-owned spot (Same owners as Tapestry Coffee downtown!) has become a Lakeville institution.

The selection is impressive without being overwhelming—classic favorites alongside creative seasonal options. The donuts themselves strike that ideal balance of being indulgent without being overly sweet or heavy.

What makes Donut Star particularly special is the genuine warmth of the owners and staff. It’s our favorite stop after church on Sundays! This is a place where regular customers are greeted by name, and newcomers are made to feel immediately welcome. The shop itself is quaint, colorful, and bright with windows bringing in sunshine on 3 walls.

Timing tip: They open early and sell out of popular varieties, so afternoon visits might mean a slightly limited selection. But honestly, we've never left disappointed regardless of what was still available.

Evening Out: Lakeville Links Indoor Golf

Once the kids are settled with a babysitter or grandparents, Lakeville offers plenty of entertainment options. Lakeville Links Indoor Golf (17630 Juniper Path Suite H) provides something different from your typical winter date night.

This isn't just golf simulators—it's a full entertainment venue with a sports bar atmosphere, multiple simulator bays, and an extensive food and drink menu. Even if you're not a serious golfer, the simulators are fun and engaging, offering various games and challenges beyond standard golf. The technology is impressive, providing realistic ball flight and course simulation.

The venue works equally well for date nights, friend gatherings, or corporate events. The atmosphere is relaxed and social, with plenty of seating areas for mingling between golf sessions. The food menu is surprisingly solid—definitely a step above standard sports bar fare—and the drink selection includes both craft options and classics.

For couples new to the area or considering a move to Lakeville, places like this demonstrate the city's evolution. This isn't just a bedroom community—there's genuine entertainment and social infrastructure that makes Lakeville a place you want to spend time, not just sleep.

Why This Matters for Your Family

After spending the day exploring Lakeville—from morning coffee to evening entertainment—what becomes clear is how intentionally this city has built itself around family life and community connection. These aren't just random businesses that happen to be family-friendly; there's a consistent thread of welcoming spaces designed with real families in mind.

When I work with families considering a move to the south metro, they often ask about "quality of life" factors beyond schools and property values. They want to know if their family will actually enjoy living somewhere, if there will be activities and community connections that make a house feel like home. Lakeville consistently delivers on these less tangible but incredibly important factors.

The businesses highlighted here represent just a fraction of what Lakeville offers, but they showcase the city's character—local ownership, genuine community investment, and a commitment to creating spaces where families can build memories. From morning coffee runs to evening date nights, everything is genuinely accessible and welcoming.
